The encryption algorithm used in symmetric encryption is fast and efficient, making it suitable for encrypting large amounts of data. However, since the same key is used for both encryption and decryption, the key exchange process becomes a critical security concern. If the key is compromised during transmission, the entire communication can be easily decrypted by unauthorized entities.

Asymmetric Encryption:
Asymmetric encryption, also known as public key encryption, utilizes a pair of mathematically related keys – the public key and the private key. The public key is freely distributed to all potential senders, while the private key is kept confidential by the receiver.

The sender uses the recipient’s public key to encrypt the data, and the receiver uses their corresponding private key to decrypt it. Asymmetric encryption ensures secure communication as the private key is known only to the receiver, making it extremely difficult for unauthorized entities to decrypt the data.

The Role of Hybrid Cipher:

While both symmetric and asymmetric encryption have their advantages and disadvantages, a hybrid cipher combines the best of both techniques to address their shortcomings.

In a typical hybrid cipher scenario, the symmetric encryption algorithm is used to encrypt the actual data, ensuring fast and efficient encryption of large data sets. However, instead of directly encrypting the encryption key with the recipient’s public key (asymmetric encryption would do), the symmetric key is encrypted using the recipient’s public key. This encrypted symmetric key is then sent alongside the encrypted data.

Upon receiving the encrypted data and the encrypted symmetric key, the recipient can use their private key to decrypt the symmetric key first. This decrypted symmetric key is finally used to decrypt the encrypted data, thereby ensuring secure and efficient communication.

By utilizing the strengths of both symmetric and asymmetric encryption, hybrid ciphers provide a robust and secure method of data encryption ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of the communication.
