When a TCP connection needs to be terminated, both the sender and receiver need to agree to close the connection gracefully. This is where the FIN packet comes into play.

Let’s say you are using a web browser to access a website. When you decide to close the browser or navigate away from the website, your device sends a FIN packet to the web server. The web server, upon receiving the FIN packet, responds with an ACK packet to acknowledge the termination request. It then sends its own FIN packet to initiate the termination of the server-side connection.
The exchange of FIN and ACK packets continues until both devices have successfully terminated the connection. This ensures that all pending data has been transmitted and received before the connection is closed.
In this example, the use of FIN packets allows the web browser and web server to gracefully close their connection, ensuring that all data is properly transmitted and no important information is lost.
