To write data on an MO disk, a laser beam is focused on the magnetic layer, locally heating it above the Curie temperature. This reduces the coercivity of the magnetic material, allowing an external magnetic field to switch the magnetic domains to the desired direction. Once the magnetic domains are set, the laser beam is turned off, and the disk cools down, locking the data in place magnetically.

Reading data from an MO disk involves a similar process. A lower-power laser beam is used to heat the magnetic layer just below the Curie temperature, causing the polarization of the reflected laser light to change. This change in polarization is then detected by a photodetector, allowing the information stored on the disk to be retrieved.
