What is Interleaving? Basics of Data Transmission Technology

In simple terms, interleaving splits data into smaller units called interleaved blocks and transmits them in a specific order. However, if an error occurs during transmission and a burst of errors affects the third sentence, C, the entire sentence would be lost if sent sequentially.

In an interleaved transmission, the message would be split into smaller blocks. For simplicity, let’s assume each sentence is split into two blocks:

  • Sentence A: Block 1 and Block 2
  • Sentence B: Block 1 and Block 2
  • Sentence C: Block 1 and Block 2
  • Sentence D: Block 1 and Block 2

In this case, the interleaved transmission order might be: Block 1 of Sentence A, Block 1 of Sentence B, Block 1 of Sentence C, Block 1 of Sentence D, Block 2 of Sentence A, Block 2 of Sentence B, Block 2 of Sentence C, Block 2 of Sentence D.

If an error affects Block 1 of Sentence C, only half of the third sentence is lost, rather than the entire sentence.

Advantages of Interleaving

Interleaving offers several benefits in data transmission:

  1. Error Correction: By spreading errors over different interleaved blocks, it becomes easier to detect and correct errors using error-correcting techniques.
