What is UPoE?
UPoE stands for Universal Power over Ethernet. It is a technology that allows the delivery of both power and data over Ethernet cables. This means that network devices, such as switches, access points, and IP cameras, can be powered and connected to the network using a single cable.
Evolution of Power Supply to Network Equipment
In the early days of networking, devices were powered using separate power cables. This required the installation of power outlets near each device, which could be cumbersome and costly. With the introduction of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, power could be delivered over the same Ethernet cables used for data transmission. This simplified the installation process and reduced the number of cables required.
However, the power delivery capabilities of PoE were limited. Standard PoE (802.3af) provided a maximum power of 15.4 watts per port, while PoE+ (802.3at) increased this to 30 watts. This was sufficient for many devices but limited the applications that could be powered over Ethernet.
To address this limitation, UPoE was developed. UPoE is a higher-power variant of PoE that can deliver up to 60 watts per port. This increased power capacity allows for the powering of devices with higher power requirements, such as pan-tilt-zoom cameras, video conferencing systems, and high-performance wireless access points.
Explanation of Basic Concept of Universal Power over Ethernet
UPoE operates by using all four pairs of wires in an Ethernet cable, unlike PoE and PoE+ which utilize only two pairs. This enables UPoE to deliver higher power levels without exceeding the maximum current that can be carried by each wire pair.
UPoE-compatible devices negotiate with the network switch to determine the power requirements and capabilities. If a device is UPoE-compatible, it can request a higher power allocation from the switch, ensuring that it receives the necessary power for its operation.
One of the major benefits of UPoE is its backward compatibility with PoE and PoE+ devices. UPoE switches can power all of these devices without any issues, albeit at the lower power levels supported by PoE and PoE+.
