What is Zero Client?
Zero Client is a type of virtualization technology that eliminates the need for an operating system (OS) or applications to be installed on the client terminal. It is a hardware device that connects to a remote server or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) host, providing the user with access to their desktop environment.
Unlike traditional thin clients, which typically have a lightweight OS installed, zero clients have no operating system or local storage. This means that all the processing power, storage, and software applications are hosted on the server, with the client device acting as a mere interface to display and interact with the virtual environment.
How does Zero Client work?
Zero clients work by leveraging desktop virtualization technologies such as VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop, or Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. These technologies enable the server to host multiple virtual desktops, each running an operating system and applications.
When a user logs in to a zero client, it establishes a connection with the virtual desktop infrastructure or server. The server then transmits the desktop environment, including the graphical interface, applications, and files, to the client device. The client device, in turn, renders the display and sends keyboard and mouse inputs back to the server to enable user interaction.
Since zero clients have no local storage or OS, they are easy to manage and maintain. Software updates, security patches, and application installations can be done centrally on the server, reducing the need for individual device maintenance or troubleshooting.
