What is DDNS?
DDNS, or Dynamic Domain Name System, is a method of mapping domain names to IP addresses that are not static or fixed. It allows individuals or organizations to host websites, FTP servers, or other online services using a domain name, even if their IP addresses change periodically.
With a traditional DNS, the IP address associated with a domain name is set manually and remains unchanged until updated. However, many internet service providers assign dynamic IP addresses to their users, meaning the IP address can change every time the user connects to the internet or periodically over time.
This dynamic nature of IP addresses presents a challenge for hosting services that need a consistent address tied to their domain name. This is where DDNS comes into play. It automatically updates the IP address associated with a domain name whenever it changes, ensuring that the domain name always points to the correct IP address, even with a dynamic IP.
Dynamic DNS Setup
To set up DDNS, you typically need to follow these steps:
1. Choose a DDNS provider: There are various DDNS service providers available, both free and paid. Choose one that suits your needs and sign up for an account.
2. Register a domain or subdomain: If you don’t already have a domain, you can register a new one or use a subdomain provided by the DDNS service.
3. Configure DNS settings: Access the DNS settings for your domain/subdomain and add the necessary DDNS records provided by your DDNS service provider. These records enable the automatic updating of IP addresses.
4. Install DDNS client software: Install the client software or application provided by your DDNS service provider on the device that has the dynamic IP address. This software periodically communicates with the DDNS server to update the IP address.
5. Test your setup: After the initial setup, test the DDNS setup by accessing your domain/subdomain from different devices and network connections. Ensure that the domain always resolves to the correct IP address, even with IP changes.
